Awakenings Guidelines

God grant me the serenity
To accept the things I cannot change,
Courage to change the things I can,
And wisdom to know the difference.

We welcome you to this on-line Al-Anon group and hope you will find the help and friendship we have been privileged to enjoy...

The focus of this on-line Al-Anon group is the sharing in our own way and from our own point of view the way we establish and maintain our relationship with God as we understand God.

And by trying to follow these suggested guidelines:

  1. We will communicate with each other and share our ES&H focused on the spiritual journey we have found in Al-Anon.

  2. We may comment on another's share as it relates to our own recovery experience, using courtesy, acceptance, and love. We may also seek help with "challenges" in our daily lives and can expect personal sharings that may help us see the situation from a different perspective, but no advice.

  3. While the use of Al-Anon Conference Approved Literature {CAL} in personal recovery and Meetings is essential and the essence of the Al-Anon way of life, we believe that brief excerpts from non-CAL literature included in one's personal sharing on line is within the guidelines set forth in the Al-Anon/Alateen Service manual as within the traditions of Al-Anon. Except for brief excerpts, non-CAL literature could distort Al-Anon's recovery process thereby decreasing the effectiveness of the program. [See Al-Anon/Alateen Service Manual page 94 which provides that brief excerpts from other literature many be part of personal sharings at meetings.] To protect copyright laws any quotes will be kept short and with proper credit noted. [Edited July, 1999]

  4. We will work hard at reminding ourselves to place principles above personalities and remembering anonymity is the spiritual foundation of all our Traditions, as well as our lives.

  5. We will support each other in the journey of improving our conscious contact with the God of our understanding. Anyone who thinks their life is or has been affected by the family disease of alcoholism is welcome to join with us.

  6. We may seek help with "challenges" in our daily lives and expect a) no advice and b) personal sharings that may help us see the situation from a different perspective. Responses may be done by posting to the group or privately.

  7. If we should receive an Awakenings communication that seems to be out of harmony with Al-Anon principles and these suggested Guidelines, we will share our concern with our Trusted Servants using this form and try to refrain from gossip and criticism during the meeting; as we let the understanding, love and peace of the program grow in us one day at a time. [added 12/99 by group conscience]

  8. Annually in April, we will take a group inventory in order to see if any changes [in guidelines] need to be made for this online Al-Anon related sharing group. [amended June 2007 after group conscience]

  9. Awakenings is listed at the Al-Anon World Service Office (ID#061428) along with other OLAs. It is designed as a special focus meeting on Steps 3 & 11/Spirituality. Al-Anon service arms wishing to include OLA meetings listed at WSO in publications should contact WSO for the list, [added after October 1997 Group Conscience]

  10. Awakenings participates with other Online Al-Anon Program Meeting representatives in joint efforts to serve the fellowship as a whole. [added after Group Conscience 2/98]

  11. As members of the world wide fellowship of the Al-Anon Family Groups, Awakenings abides by the licensing agreement to use Conference Approved Literature in our online meeting - first granted to us July 4, 1998, by the Board of Trustees, Al-Anon Family Groups, Inc., amended November 11, 1998 and renewed November 1999. We agree that: a) We will only quote a maximum of one paragraph in our shares from CAL. b) Any quotes from CAL in our shares will show the following acknowledgment at the end of the excerpt and before the member begins to share his/her individual experience, strength and hope: "From __________________, Page Number ____________ Copyright 19____, by Al-Anon Family Group Headquarters, Inc., Limited use by express written permission of Al-Anon Family Group Headquarters, inc." c. That any excerpts from CAL will not be altered, printed or archived for later combination with other sharings or excerpts. Will not be included or published on a website or posting, will not be made available to any person or website other than at and for our Awakenings meeting and will be treated like a personal, private communication of each participant in the meeting. [added 7/98 by group conscience]

  12. If anyone decides that they do not want to participate in this sharing focus, they will request that their name be removed from the list.

The Group Conscience requests that all members refrain from gossip, dominance, and discussion of religion, treatment centers, self-help programs, and counseling. We keep the focus on the Al-Anon program, on ourselves, and not on the alcoholic. [added 10/2008 by group conscience]

If you find these suggested Guidelines, adopted by the original participants and amended as our experiences in online Al-Anon emerged, speak to you and if you would like to join us please see how to join.
